Books of Hope was developed through the Memory Project, a powerful service-learning opportunity that connects children in orphanages around the world with art students in the United States.
In the Memory Project, advanced art students have the opportunity to create a portrait for a child who may not even have a photograph of him or herself. In return, when the portraits are delivered, the children have the opportunity to make a drawing for the American art student. This art exchange creates a common ground for communication between individuals whose lives are otherwise very different.
The project serves to not only provide a beautiful keepsake that honors the identity of the child, but it also fosters empathy and understanding in American classrooms.
