When you [give] a man a book you don't [give] just twelve ounces of paper and ink and glue - you [give] him a whole new life.  Love and friendship and humour and ships at sea by night - there's all heaven and earth in a book...

~Christopher Morley

The most enduring love affair of my life has been with books. My earliest memories are of reading... reading secretly after bedtime with a flashlight under the covers, reading at the dinner table while my parents begged me to put the book down, reading on family road trips until I made myself carsick. As an adult, my books have threatened to crowd me out of every home I've ever lived in.

Having been blessed with a loving family who could provide me with food and shelter, my worst nightmare was a world without books.

But that is exactly the world in which millions of people live.

Theirs is a world of day-to-day survival: the quest for the next meal, the longing for a soft bed, the desperate need for life-saving medicines. In the face of these harsh realities, a simple book seems almost trivial. But here at the Books of Hope program, we believe that books are much more.

Books are food for the soul and shelter for the spirit. A single book can contain a universe of hope and possibility. Books - and the learning and imagination they inspire - allow us to explore our potential and become fully alive.

The children we serve in Uganda and India have seen more than their share of misery. Their lives have been a constant struggle for survival for far too long. But as they emerge from war and slavery, we hope, through a book made of friendship and love, we can help them construct a vision for a better life. We hope we can help them move from surviving to thriving, and we believe that books are a critical part of that transition.

Join hundreds of schools around the country as they write, illustrate and bind books for children around the world. Together, we can help reawaken dreams in children who may have forgotten how to dream.

Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
