Letter from Ugandan Student

Dear Books of Hope,

I am called Juliana. I am 12 years old. I am in P-2. I would like to send my thanks for all the books that you have given us. I am very happy and I shall read as many books as I can. Thank you so much.

Yours Sincerely,
N. Juliana

Letter from U.S. Teacher

These books are from South Milwaukee High School's Psychology Classes. As the students studied about child development, several students decided to write for the children in Uganda. We had seen the PowerPoint and video clips. The whole class felt the videos were amazing and were very moved by the plight of the children.

The money was raised by classroom bottle water sales and a student run bake sale.

Thanks for helping us participate in this program.
Kathleen K., Psychology Teacher,
Milwaukee, WI

Compare our costs to shipping independently!

As you'll see below, we offer you a discount on international shipping and provide a variety of services, such as feedback, photographs, and updates that you could not guarantee if you were to ship independently.

  • The cost for shipping through Books of Hope shown in the table below includes our participation fee, domestic shipping expenses and the cost of the box. Your domestic shipping costs to us would be even lower if you were shipping only books through Media Mail or if your box was lighter than 35 pounds

  • The cost for the other parcel services includes $50 as a minimum additional cost you'd pay in postal taxes and to have your books delivered to your school from the P.O. Box in Gulu.

These prices reflect international shipping to Gulu, Uganda for 35-pound 15 x 12 x 10-inch boxes.

  1 Box 2 Boxes 3 Boxes 4 Boxes 5 Boxes

FedEx Int'l Economy $661.10 $1272.20
DHL World- wide Express $746.50 $1443.50

Please bear in mind that shipping independently does NOT guarantee any feedback or photos from your sponsored school or even confirmation of receipt.

The reality is that Uganda is an extremely poor country with very little dependable infrastructure, either for communication or transportation. Uganda also has an immensly corrupt bureaucracy, and, if you were to ship independently, your package could very well "disappear" before reaching its destination.

With all of that in mind, we hope you'll agree that Books of Hope is a great deal for you!

Approx.* Cost Breakdown of Shipping with Books of Hope:

Number of Boxes Participation Fee Cost for domestic shipping to U.S. warehouse ($24.08 per 35 lb box at the USPS parcel post rate*) Cost for United States Postal Service "ReadyPost 15 x 12 x 10-inch Mailing Carton" at $3.19 per box Total Cost
1 $125 $24.08 $3.19 $152.27
2 $225 $48.16 $6.38 $279.54
3 $225 $72.24 $9.57 $306.81
4 $275 $96.32 $12.76 $384.08
5 $325 $120.4 $15.95 $461.35

Cost Breakdown for Other Shipping Methods:

One 35 pound box with 15" x 12" by 10" dimensions

Service Cost to P.O. Box in Gulu Total including min. cost of $50 for school delivery, taxes, etc Ship What?
United States Postal Service Priority Mail International - Flat Rate $107.90 $157.90 Two 20 lb boxes of books & supplies (20 lb max weight for each $53.95 box with 12" x 12" x 5.5" dimensions. Two boxes have a total volume of 1584 cubic inches)
This may initially seem cheaper than shipping 1 box through us, but this does not include the relationships, feedback, assessment, and accountability that shipping with Books of Hope does.

There is also the possibility that your package will be looted. This has nothing to do with the reliability of our postal service, it's just that our postal service hands over your package to local authorities in Uganda, where there's often a great deal of corruption. Even the Ugandans agree that, for individuals, it's safer to send via UPS or DHL, which operate with their own staff in Uganda, but, as you'll see below, their costs are prohibitively expensive.
